WINGED NUDE GODDESS ON IBEXES

Representation of the divine feminine in Mesopotamian religion of the Old Babylonian period; apotropaic and votive cult; direct comparison with the Queen of the Night. The bird-talon feet and the posture on ibexes evoke the chthonic forces of Mesopotamian cosmology; AO 6501 is cited as comparandum for the winged nude goddess type in studies on the Queen of the Night. For an updated interpretive reading of the zoomorphic iconography applicable to AO 6501 see Hirvonen.
